Brief Description of contract manufacturing

An organization capable of manufacturing or purchasing all the components that needed to produce a finished device or product. It involves the process of making of subcomponents or products for one company by another company. The contract manufacturers provide services to several firms based on their own or the customer's designs, specifications and formulas. It also enables the companies to reduce the level of investment in their own capabilities to manufacture and retaining product produced to a high quality at a reasonable price that delivered to a flexible schedule.

Some of the industries that use this process are: semiconductor, defense, medical, personal care, energy, automotive, aerospace fields and computer. It also includes CNC machining, aluminum dye casting, gears, forging, grinding and complex assembly. Industries such as electronics, automobiles and pharmaceuticals use this process in their shared efforts with suppliers. This process offers more benefits for business and the business which has higher value for its products because of its manufacturing excellence. It is also determined by some micro economic factors that includes globalization, increased collaborative environments in the supply chain and the cost economics.

This manufacturing is engaged mainly by business in consumer and also by industrial goods industries. Factors such as increased communication flows between the partners through information technology and the necessity to be with customers strictly needs the presence of the third party vendors in this process. There are various businesses that turned to third parties to gain advantages of cost, to be near the customers and to obtain certain skill advantages with the vendors.

Most of the contract manufacturing business a hiring firm will contact the contract manager to get the design, formula and specifications. Generally, the hiring firm is an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). The contract manufacturers (CM) have to estimate the parts depends on the processes, labor, tooling, and the cost of materials. The OEM will get multiple estimates from various CM. when the process of biding completed the hiring firm will select a source. Then it is the duty of the CM to produce the units of same specifications and design.

Here are some of the tips for choosing the contract manufacturing companies: choose the company which has the excellent track of record, choose a company which can provide you quality job at reasonable prices, choose a company which give proper training and also give more importance to their people, choose a company that answers to all your needs, choose the company that always give something back to its community and so on.

Thus the CM can be used for all the way from single components to a complete product. The personal computers, cell phones, printers are the some of the examples that are made using this method.
